The South Jersey Company Changing Lives for Lymphedema and Mastectomy Patients

Lymphedema is a chronic, painful condition that affects an approximate 10 million Americans. The condition is caused when a compromised lymphatic system results in the buildup of lymph fluid which in turn induces swelling in the extremities. If left untreated, lymphedema can increase the risk for skin infection and sepsis, skin breakdown as well as a hindered ability to use the affected extremity without issue.

Fortunately for those suffering, the South Jersey-based EOS Medical is available to those in need.

"Our business is a unique durable medical equipment business that works with Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance companies to help get patients the care they need within the comfort of their own home" Dana Patson said. "In January 2024, lymphedema became a covered diagnosis."

Dana founded EOS Medical almost 20 years ago as a company providing non-opioid, noninvasive pain management to patients with acute and chronic pain. Initially, the company was conceived in the orthopedic realm, focused primarily on back braces and TENS units to alleviate pain. They've since grown to include lymphedema treatments and breast products to help women who've had mastectomies and cancer treatments.

EOS Medical now works with chiropractors for orthopedic patients, pain management specialists, orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, podiatrists, vascular specialists, radiational, and medical oncologists to help patients heal. For anyone who could benefit from the company's offerings, EOS will verify patient insurance to ensure coverage is valid and then fit patients with any products they may need.

As far as lymphedema treatment, EOS Medical offers compression garments, either off-the-shelf or custom made, along with lymphedema pumps and daytime and nighttime compression.

Two years ago, EOS Medical expanded into mastectomy garments - prosthetics, shapers, compression bras and regular bras. Patients are now able to obtain bras every six months and forms and prosthetics every two years via insurance.

"We measure them, fit them, and we follow them all the way through their survivorship," Dana said. "Making a true difference in someone's everyday life is just amazing to me. I want to be that ray of hope for them."

One of the forms Dana loves is the Amoena Adapt Air, which can be pumped to fill deficits left by a lumpectomy. It can also fill in tissue left on a patient's chest wall after a bilateral or unilateral mastectomy.

There is a new contact breast form for patients who are very active - instead of a pocketed prosthetic, which lays directly on the skin adhered by surgical grade adhesive.

While last year was focused on growth for EOS Medical, 2025 is focused on getting the word out.

"This year is about sustaining and spreading awareness," said Ryan Denner, EOS Medical vice president and Dana's son. "We want to let patients know that no matter what your condition is and what state your condition is in, you shouldn't be too proud to say you need help and need to see a doctor. Your body is telling you something's wrong. Seek help. There are people like us who are here to help."

Even though owning a business means work "never stops" according to Dana, it's safe to say that she, Ryan and the entire EOS Medical team finds fulfillment in their work.

"There's no greater satisfaction than being able to look at the joy you bring somebody when they can't help themselves and they turn to different avenues to try to find a way of relief, a way to make themselves feel better," Ryan said. "You can step in and be that intermediary to help the doctor and patient, and both of them come back to you and say thank you for what you did."
